What a way to kick off his career at Old Trafford: scoring a fantastic hat-trick as Manchester United dispatch Champions' League opponents, Fenerbahce 6-2.

Rooney's the real deal. Despite his glowing performance at the Euro Championships, the extreme enthusiasm of the English press naturally engendered sceptical feelings in me about Rooney's potential - "another Michael Owen?" I asked myself - but it looks clear that I was wrong to underestimate the lad.
England have a winner on their hands, though I'm still doubtful Sven Goran Eriksson will know how to make optimal use of him.

In terms of using Rooney effectively: It would really take an exceptional manager to screw that up - all you have to do is just play him up front and he'll score a goal or two out of nothing, how hard can that be? - but I have no doubt that Sven is that exceptional manager!
