I have heard the term "charity vampires" for this kind of behavior. It is very common. But even this kind of selfishness can work ot other people's benefit. I think there was a lot of this kind of motivation in the Abolition movement, working on a national level.

Status does not have to be a zero sum game. Low status individuals can go outside the group to find people to trample on. This works as a mechanism of conquest, and there are many, many historical examples. I suppose in the end ona global scale no more new status is created, unlike wealth, but that's a pretty big scale for the indidivuals involved.
