It's odd that someone as left-leaning as David Aaronovitch should deserve a "watch" blog simply for daring to deviate from the dogma that every brown-skinned person from the Third World would be an angel if only he (and given the belief system, it's pretty much always a he) had more money in his wallet; why, one would think certain people found such deviants particularly threatening, as it's not quite so easy to demonize them to one's fellow ideologues as Right-Wing-Death-Beasts™ ...

Frank McGahon

Indeed, but I think the main reason that Aaronovitch and Cohen rile the likes of Daniel D.., er, I mean bruschettaboy (or is it John Saul Montoya?, I can never quite keep up) is that they are traitors to the cause.

Frank McGahon Watch

You are being monitored.

J.Cassian

(Yes, I admit, I have way too much time on my hands this afternoon.)

Frank McGahon

Brilliant stuff!

Matt McIntosh

Hilarious!

If there's one thing more pathetic than setting up your own watch blog to parse and pore over every entry by your pet blog noire too,

We'll take our own counsel on that, thanks. Some points of information:

- FI Fie was set up in response to the ludicrously censorious finger (of one R. Waghorne) to comments over on the FI blog. I trust you know who they are. In essence, we exist simply to get on Dickie's tit, a task at which we are highly effective.

- R.W. & Co. have themselves associated with and promoted "watch" blogs such as IndyMedia Ireland WAtch. Ironic, yes?

Frank McGahon

In essence, we exist simply to get on Dickie's tit, a task at which we are highly effective.

Which is a bit, well, pathetic if you think about it (or if you prefer, "take your own counsel"). By the way, I'm not quite sure if you have actually been highly effective* at getting on Mr Waghorne's "tits" - google doesn't seem to think so - but he must have really pissed in your cornflakes at some stage to draw this kind of attention. What is it? Ten months now?

R.W. & Co. have themselves associated with and promoted "watch" blogs such as IndyMedia Ireland WAtch. Ironic, yes?

I suppose it would be ironic if any of those guys had posted a similar opinion to mine above. I don't know if they have, but then you're the expert on Mr Waghorne and the Freedom Institute, not me.

* Oh, I'm sure you'll be able to correct me if I'm wrong and point out every instance of his annoyance, but I'd rather you didn't bother, I really don't care all that much.

EWI

but I'd rather you didn't bother, I really don't care all that much.

Then for God's sake don't blog on it.

Frank McGahon

God you really do need things spelling out don't you? I'd rather you didn't bother correcting that throwaway remark (that you mightn't have actually annoyed Mr Waghorne) because it's not all that relevant for the purposes of pointing out that he's certainly annoyed you sufficiently for you to devote ten months (and counting) of your life to dissecting his every syllable.

dsquared

You're entitled to your opinion, but you might notice that David Aaronovitich disagrees with you, and actually links to us from his sidebar under "good things".

I think possibly the most pathetic thing of all is to "watch" someone else's blog comments like this, all the while pretending that you're far above this kind of behaviour.

Frank McGahon

I think possibly the most pathetic thing of all is to "watch" someone else's blog comments like this, all the while pretending that you're far above this kind of behaviour.

I suppose it would be if I maintained a Daniel-Davies-and-all-his-sock-puppet-blog-comments-watch blog, but I couldn't help but "watch" that particular slip of yours considering it was in the middle of a discussion to which I was party. As for whether I'm "above" it, it's not that I think such behaviour is morally reprehensible but it is a bit pathetic so I hope I am above it and if I ever did descend to such depths of sad-bastardy I'd be happy for someone to point out the error of my ways.

I'm even prepared to bet that you know this all too well - if there was no sad-bastard stigma attaching to maintaining a watch blog, why use the sockpuppet? Or better yet, if you truly want to get the word out about how dreadful the "Decent Left" is, why not just blog about Aaronovitch and Cohen at Crooked Timber?

J.Cassian

Maybe dsquared should just call himself "Matthew Corbett" and have done with it.

you might notice that David Aaronovitich disagrees with you, and actually links to us from his sidebar under "good things".

That's probably because David Aaronovitch is a pretty liberal guy. He gets to come out of this looking magnanimous and you get to come out looking paranoid and obsessive. That's the whole problem with the "Watch" blog: it's really deeply flattering to its "victims". After all, if they weren't so important, why would people devote large amounts of their free time to contradicting their every opinion? In a similar sort of way, it used to be a badge of honour for TV programme makers to incur the wrath of Mary Whitehouse and her National Viewers' and Listeners' Association.

dsquared

I'm even prepared to bet that you know this all too well - if there was no sad-bastard stigma attaching to maintaining a watch blog, why use the sockpuppet?

It's a joke, for heaven's sake. There are three people who post using the name "bruschettaboy", which is a reference to Aaronovitch's famous "bruschetta orthodoxies" article. We do in fact quite like Decent Dave and have quite a friendly relationship with him. I don't think we've ever publicised AW and it would have remained an in-joke for a dozen mates if Aaro hadn't linked it (it also used to turn up third result on a google search for "aaronovitch" before Google mended the algorithm to not sort blogspot so highly).

For what it's worth, I did used to run a "Watch" blog on my own site in the form of "Shorter Steven den Beste". It's actually quite an interesting use of the format and good fun to do. I don't see why it is so much more "sad" to have a blog which is interested in a particular journalist than in any other potential subject and I would even argue that it is in many ways less "sad" than the normal kind of blog which is really just a jumped-up livejournal. Of course I am currently weeping bitter tears that you lot think I am "sad", as well as having exposed me as the Islam-apologising traitorous dog that I am, but I will have a Lemsip and a wank later tonight and I daresay that will make me feel better.

On a note of internet etymology, I don't think that "bruschettaboy" can be correctly called a "sock puppet", as I have never (except by accident a couple of times) used the BB screen name in the same comments threads as my own, and have always immediately admitted it when I did. A sock puppet surely has to be a fictional character created to make one's point of view look more widely held than it is.

bruschettaboy

Yes, dsquared is exactly right about the definition of a sock puppet, he's very clever.

Frank McGahon

A sock puppet surely has to be a fictional character created to make one's point of view look more widely held than it is.

I think that astroturfing is probably the more pertinent term for that phenomenon. My understanding is that while sock-puppets are necessary for astroturfing, a sock puppet isn't restricted to astroturfery and can consist of fictional characters for any purpose (the most acceptable being satirical).

but I will have a Lemsip and a wank later tonight

Now that's sad!

EWI

God you really do need things spelling out don't you?

Look, I'm not the one who blogged this in the first place, but now can only proclaim just how bored he is with the whole topic.

If you're just going to whine at me at length, then I see no further point in continuing this discussion.

Frank McGahon

Look, I'm not the one who blogged this in the first place, but now can only proclaim just how bored he is with the whole topic.

Actually I just said I didn't have any interest in chapter and verse on how successfully you had "got on" Mr Waghorne's "tits" but now that you mention it, I don't really give that much of a stuff about FI Foe... either, I only mentioned it in passing as an example of a watch blog, a genre I consider to be a bit pathetic.

dsquared

ahhhhhh that's much, much better now. The Lemsip worked a treat too.

Frank McGahon
